Homes are often built on stilts, and markets float gently on the water. The river is not just a source of food and income, but a way of life—shaping traditions, crafts, and community spirit. Plants like water hyacinth become natural materials for weaving baskets. This lifestyle reflects the resilience and simplicity of Vietnam’s River Villages, where life flows gently, just like the rivers that sustain it.

In the Mekong Delta, where rivers shape the land and life flows with the current, handicrafts have been quietly woven into daily life for generations. Long before modern materials arrived, local people crafted what they needed from nature— palm leaves, water hyacinth, and seagrass—turning simple things into essential tools and beautiful objects.

Around the early 2000s, something remarkable happened. Water hyacinth, once seen as a troublesome weed clogging the canals, began to take on a new role. Local families started drying its long stems under the sun and weaving them into baskets, trays, mats, and homewares. What began as a household activity soon grew into a local trade, offering both income and pride.

By 2003, some of the first organized weaving groups were formed in southern provinces. The craftspeople—mostly women—passed their skills from mother to daughter, weaving at home while watching over children or tending to farms. These quiet villages started connecting with the world, one handcrafted item at a time.

Nowaday, Vietnam’s traditional handicrafts drew international attention. Exhibitions abroad began showcasing the rustic charm and sustainability of water hyacinth and seagrass products.

Today, while tools have modernized slightly and new designs are created for global tastes, the spirit remains unchanged. Every basket, mat, or tray still carries the softness of  river reeds and the quiet strength of rural life.
